John Madigan of Tulsa Given Community Hero Award

A well- deserved honor was bestowed upon our Tulsa chapter secretary, John Madigan at the Oklahoma Equality Center’s Gala Ball on April 28, 2012. He was honored with the Community Hero Award.


John Madigan, was born in Luscar, Alberta, Canada, raised on a farm in Saskatchewan, and has lived in Tulsa since 1989 because of the Oil and Gas Business. John got involved with Prime Timers in 1995 and served in leadership. He began to volunteer with OkEq formally known as Tulsa Oklahomans for Human Rights in 2000. He became the treasurer of the OkEq Pyramid Capital Campaign Project which raised the funds for the Dennis R. Neill Equality Center. He helped with renovations on the Equality Center and continued to assist the staff and board. In April 2009, John took the lead as program facilitator for the SAGE program at OkEq. SAGE is the Services and Advocacy for LGBT Elders program at OkEq. John assisted OkEq in receiving their national affiliation and accreditation with SAGE USA on March 20, 2012. He spends countless hours serving our LGBT older adults and leads the Friendly Visitor program which visits home bound and isolated LGBT older residents.
