Central Oklahoma PrimeTimers Labor Day Getaway 2012

The theme of this year’s Oklahoma City Prime Timer Labor Day Getaway "Party Like It’s the End of the World" sure fit this year’s Labor Day Celebration. It was indeed a party for everyone with loads of men, food and entertainment. The Weekend officially begin on Thursday August 30th. at sign in. Each guest received their package for the weekend including their name tag and a great T-Shirt with the Mayan Calendar on it (thus the theme "Party Like..." since the Mayan calendar ends on Dec 31st of this year.)

laborDayHppyHourWe arrived on Tuesday this year to take advantage of the book 7 days for the price of 6 days. The event is always held at the Habana Inn Gay Resort within the Gay area of Oklahoma City. Besides the 3 bars at the Habana there are 5 or 6 other gay bars on the next street. The Habana also features a terrific restaurant , a book/gift shop and two pools. The early arrival gave us time to check out some of our favorite sights in Oklahoma on Tuesday and Wednesday. On Wednesday our two friends Tom & Dick from Ohio arrived so we took them to dinner at one of our nearby favorite restaurants, Belle Isle Brewery.

Thursday the Prime Timers from around the country really started checking in and the east pool became a mecca for the guys. Thursday night was a Welcome Party in the Copa Bar , where the light Hors D’oeuvres proved to be a meal and a time to see old friends and meet new ones.

Friday started with a Continental Breakfast served by the east pool (this would be repeated each morning thru Monday morning). We were glad to see our friend Dennis from Rhode Island had arrived late Thursday evening. Friday at 4:30 to 6:30 PM the daily Happy Hour began. This repeated through Sunday. It is held in room 116 by the east pool and a different Prime Timer Chapter host each Happy Hour with free drinks with all the tips going to The Woody Baldwin Fund. Friday night was a buffet dinner and entertainment in the Copa Bar. This time the bar was turned into an Irish Pub with a Irish Band playing and free Guinness and Harp poured in our Souvenir Glasses.

Each day Friday through Sunday a hospitality room is located in room 117 by the east pool. There are free water, sodas, coffee and snacks all day. It is also a great place to take a break from the sun and meet and talk with other Prime Timers.

TomHendricksWaiterSaturday morning featured two informational talks presented in the Copa Bar. This was followed at noon with the Annual Group photo. A box lunch was served after the photo shoot and Randy Lunsford again provided the wonderful entertainment. He is a member of the Oklahoma City Prime Timers and performs each year . He is a wonderful singer and yes I bought one of his CDs this year. Saturday night was another buffet dinner with entertainment by the “Austin Babtist Women”. This group had the crowd busting their sides with laughter and such talented ladies/guys we have never seen.

Sunday was the first of two Brunches held in the Copa Bar with the other held on Monday. The afternoon featured tours of Oklahoma City (as did Saturday afternoon) and also Bridge games were held both Saturday and Sunday afternoon. Sunday night was dine on your own so we loaded up our three friends and drove to Zorba’s Mediterranean Restaurant for a great meal. The only disappointment this year was no dinner and drag show at the Boom Bar located across the street from the Habana. It was always such fun.

Monday after brunch there were many goodbyes until next years Labor Day Celebration. If you have never been, you should plan to attend. Rooms go on sale in early March, but sell out within a couple of hours. Also add your name to the Oklahoma City Prime Timer notification list so you will receive the information when it comes out. The rooms are separate from the Prime Timer Activities and both are very reasonable. See everyone next Labor Day!
